Native Installation and Single-Binary Deployment (Discontinued)

Next Terminal is now distributed as Docker / Docker Compose only. Native installation, including the old single-binary deployment, is no longer supported: there is no public native installation package, and upgrading by replacing the binary file alone is no longer possible.

If you are installing Next Terminal for the first time, follow Container Installation.

Why it was discontinued

  • Starting from v3.2.0, the security gateway and frontend assets are no longer embedded in the next-terminal binary. They are loaded from the bin and web directories in the installation directory. This change reduced server memory usage from about 200 MB to about 80 MB, but it also meant that replacing only the next-terminal binary was no longer enough — next-terminal, bin, and web must be updated together.
  • The native installation package was later withdrawn as well. The download URL previously documented here, https://f.next-terminal.com/next-terminal/servers/next-terminal.tar.gz, is no longer available (it returns 404). Do not use it.

Still running an old native or single-binary deployment

  • Old versions keep running, but no official native package is published and they cannot be upgraded by replacing the binary file.
  • Migrate to a container deployment: start the container as described in Container Installation, mount your existing config.yaml as /etc/next-terminal/config.yaml and your data directory as /usr/local/next-terminal/data, and keep using your existing PostgreSQL instance. Switch the access entry point once the data checks out.
